Dr Stephen Twigg's main research focus is the role played by blood glucose and growth factors in the pathogenesis of diabetes related complications, and in regulating these parameters to improve clinical outcomes. He was awarded a NHMRC New Investigator Project Grant in 2003 for research involving connective tissue growth factor and diabetes complications, and receives ongoing research support from bodies which include the NHMRC and JDRF International, with studies involving multiple national and international collaborations. He has published over 50 original scientific research articles in internationaljournals of endocrinology, and has been an invited speaker at the American Diabetes Association and IDF Scientific meetings. As the medical head of the Endocrinology Research Laboratories at RPAH since2003, Dr Twigg supervises Post-Doc, PhD, Masters and Honours students, in studies with research methods that utilise cell based work, small and large animal models and human clinical studies, spanningthe lab through to the clinic. He is dedicated towards finding scientific solutions to the medical problems related to diabetes and its complications and in mentoring and training laboratory students and fellows in the scientific process.
Dr Twigg has been the chair of the Program Organising Committee of the Endocrine Society of Australia Annual Scientific Meeting, 2004-06.He is a Board Member of Diabetes Australia, an Executive Member of the Council of the Australian Diabetes Society, and a member of the Specialist Advisory Committee in Endocrinology of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. He is an Editorial board member of both the UK Journal, Clinical Endocrinology and the educational Australian journal, Diabetes Management. He is also a member of the JDRF Diabetes Complications Assessment panel, which meets twice yearly in New York.
